Brutal Chess is a 3D simulation of the timeless game of chess. It is not, however, very brutal as the name may imply.
Scholars say that the game of chess has existed in it's current form since around 1475 when the eastern game of chantrang was modified in southern Europe to become what we would know today as chess. The game itself is between two players, each player has sixteen pieces and each piece has a unique movement pattern. The pawns are capable of moving one square forwards at a time and only able to attack a piece diagonally in front of them. The rooks being able to move in a straight line when unobstructed and able to take any piece that sits perpendicular to them. The bishops can only move on a diagonal and take pieces that sit diagonally from them. The knights are the most confusing of movers and can move two spaces forward in any direction and one space to the left of that. Then the king and queen can move in any direction but the king is restricted to one square of movement unlike the queen who can move as far as she likes. The game ends when one player takes is in the position to take the other players king decidedly, this is called Check Mate.
Brutal Chess is a faithful recreation of the game with very attractive 3D graphics. It's name would suggest something a little more flashy, in line with Battle Chess, but this is a much more muted affair. The developers have taken a great deal of care recreating a lifelike chess board though and all of the pieces are well made with some nice touches like realistic shadows and movement animations.
There's really not a huge amount to say about the product. It's a very well made program and one of the nicest recreations of a chessboard we've seen yet. If you're looking for something with flashy animations and crazy characters you may do better elsewhere. If you're looking for a proper game of chess with an attractive style then this is the game for you.
Pros
- Faithful Recreation of the Game of Chess
- Nice Graphical Touches
Cons
- The Name Implies More Than the Game Delivers
